Auto thefts in Avon Lake
AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) – A local community has become the latest target for car thieves.
Residents of Legacy Pointe in Avon Lake are concerned after a series of recent car break-ins.
“I’m a little worried about this happening,” said resident Dana Schnabel.
Schnabel says someone was on his property Sunday night.
“I have the impression that someone tried to enter our house. When I walked down the steps the rear sliding door had handprints in this pattern where someone tried to slide the door, and when I got out of my car I noticed fingerprints on the edge of the chassis of my car, ”said Schnabel.
It’s an issue that Avon Lake Police addressed on Wednesday night in a town hall with residents.
“We had more cars stolen in the first month of 2021 than in the whole of 2020,” said Chief Vincent Molnar.
Police say nearly 20 cars have been stolen this year. Almost all of them have been unlocked with the keys inside.
“We’ve tried to get the message out about target hardening, doing things to make your vehicle less likely to be stolen,” Molnar said.
Avon Lake Police say the suspects are young and officers even caught the children and chased them. However, when they start driving 100 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, the police call off the chase.
“We do additional patrols at night. 100% of these crimes take place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. We put detectives in unmarked vehicles, ”said the detective. Sgt. Reed Reikowski.
Almost all of the stolen vehicles were found in East Cleveland, according to police. Still, they remind people to lock their doors at night and to park in the garage if possible.
