Barrel racing is growing in popularity, says local event organizer – SteinbachOnline.com

Horses, barrels and riders will meet at Hannover’s farmland in Grunthal tonight as the Barrel Racing Series continues.

Carollyne Kehler is the organizer of the “Ride like a mother” and she noticed that the sport was growing in popularity.

“Barrel racing is very popular right now,” she says. “In addition, the breakaway roping is also gaining popularity, which is the women’s roping event. Well, anyone could do a breakaway, but for the most part, it’s the ladies who do the breakaway. And so, it is also gaining popularity.

What is the reason that more people are interested in this sport?

Kehler suspects it might have something to do with TV shows that depict a ranching/rodeo lifestyle.

She says barrel racing is fun and competitive.

“Basically, you take your horse and run as fast as you can around three barrels without knocking them over,” Kehler explains. “We race against each other in time, but really, you’re racing against yourself to have the best time possible.”

Kehler says it’s a great time for people to watch races and learn more about the sport.

“Welcome anyone who wants to come say hello, ask questions, that would be fantastic,” she said. “I mean, that’s why we put it on, right?” It’s a community event, come see it, learn. That’s exactly what we’re here for. »
