Event Marketing via WhatsApp – Complete Guide

Event marketing is a very interesting field.

All that adrenaline rush chasing a target ticket sale – it’s a super exciting and creative process.

In today’s article, you’ll find out how to market your event via Whatsapp.

But before that,

Why WhatsApp?

Messaging has become the preferred mode of communication lately.

And WhatsApp is the largest platform with over 1.5 billion users, including 500 million daily users.

It’s the fastest platform to reach people!

90% of messages are opened within three seconds.

We keep checking WhatsApp throughout the day.

An average person opens WhatsApp every hour.

Thus, it is definitely a platform to leverage if you are into event marketing.

So let’s move on to strategies.

Before that, hope you have created a Whatsapp business account.

How to create a WhatsApp business account.

  1. Definition of the target customer.
  2. WhatsApp groups.
  3. Ping this friend.
  4. No forward use catalog.
  5. ‘Whatsapp us’ widget.
  6. Whatsapp radio service.
  7. Use whatsapp status.
  8. Whatsapp communities.

1. Define the target customer

This is the first step in any marketing campaign.

Clearly define your target customers – how old are they, where do they live, what is their income bracket, what jobs do they do, what are their interests, what are their needs, what type of content do they consume?

“Know your target customers like you know your friends.”

2. Whatsapp Groups

Now that you know your target audience, target the WhatsApp groups they belong to!

Now, how do you find these groups?

Let me give you an example,

For the , one of our target audiences was backpackers in Bangalore.

So we Googled “Trekking Communities in Bangalore”.

Makes a list of communities and their contact number.

Almost all of them had a WhatsApp group and we offered them to post information about the festival on their groups.

Now, just presenting won’t always work, you also need to encourage them to make that effort to post in the group.

Thus, we have also developed discount codes for each of the groups we are targeting.

You can also work on an affiliate basis if it comes to for-profit organizations.

Also use the Facebook group to find these WhatsApp groups!

Almost all of these Facebook groups would have moved to the WhatsApp group.

So, ping the group admin and tell them about the event and see if they are interested.

3. Ping this friend

Do you know that friend who looks like your target audience?

Or a friend of a friend?

Call them!

And ask them to forward the content of your event to relevant groups and individuals.

Forwards work best when accompanied by a personal message.

For example, it might look like –

“Hey, I’m attending this event this weekend – who’s coming?”

Or

“Hey, there are all the interesting festivals going on this weekend – you might find that interesting.”

Don’t just pass on, start a conversation with him.

4. Use the catalog (Chuck text forwards)

How many of you have actually read the broadcast outposts?

Not me!

Simply writing with posters is a very boring and ineffective way to promote your event.

Enter the catalog

A very attractive way to market your event with a direct call to action feature!

Let’s look at this example of a cycling rally event.

WhatsApp catalog

What a viewer sees first is a poster and a caption.

Here, the handsome, killer-eyed biker staring straight into the camera is really grabbing the audience’s attention.

Now the customer is curious and presses the view.

This displays the event details.

Whatsapp catalog display

More posters, an essay, a link to the website and the best thing — the “message button”, making the call to action so easy!

Videos are also a good way to market the event, but it lacks the CTA button like the catalog.

5. ‘Whatsapp widget us.’

Customers may have questions about your event and WhatsApp is the best way to answer them.

Thus, integrate a ‘Whatsapp us’ widget on your ticketing page or on the whole site.

6.Whatsapp radio service

There are a number of radio services on WhatsApp.

They usually inform people about happenings in and around a city.

One such service is Comet Broadcast.

7. Use WhatsApp status (don’t keep messaging them all the time)

Most people who inquired about the event would have saved your number.

So don’t keep spamming them with your event content every time.

Instead, post them as stories.

This way they are reminded of your event from time to time.

8. Whatsapp Communities

Create WhatsApp communities for your attendees.

But don’t just create one for the sake of creating it.

It should have a definite purpose and add value to the customer.

For the Bloom in Green Transformational festival, we have created urban groups for participants.

They used the group to make their travel plans together and also planned meetings around town before the event.

That said,

Whatsapp marketing can get a little tricky.

Be sure not to invade the participants’ privacy.

No one likes waking up to a forwarded message from an unknown number. (especially women – it’s creepy)!

That’s it!
