The Amani National Congress (ANC) led by Musalia Mudavadi released a statement against Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga after his approval on Friday, December 31.
Raila was supported in a much-vaunted meeting meant to unite the Luhya nation as the region’s preferred candidates. The event was organized by the Secretary General of COTU, Francis Atwoli.
After receiving the approval, Raila pledged to lead an economic revolution that will secure jobs for young people by wooing the crowds that had invaded Bukhungu Stadium.
COTU boss Francis Atwoli, ODM chief Raila Odinga, Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya and his counterpart from Kitui Charity Ngilu.
However, Mudavadi’s ANC party rejected all endorsements and proclamations made at the event. In a statement read by the former member of Parliament for Butere, Dr Amukowa Anangwe, the party led by Musalia denounced the support given by Atwoli and the elders of the Luhya community.
In an unarmed attack, the party argued that the elders were tricked by Atwoli into making statements that do not reflect the region’s true position ahead of the August 2022 presidential election.
“As a party, we were appalled by the resolutions that were reportedly adopted by the Council of Elders of Luhya under the patronage of Francis Atwoli. The said resolutions are null and void insofar as they aim to usurp the legitimate and democratic right of voters to freely choose the one they prefer for various seats in 2022, ”Anangwe read in part of the statement.
The party described the resolutions as an attempt to impose the ODM leader on residents of the western region.
“This is an attempt to impose Raila as the region’s preferred presidential candidate, a resolution that is not only wishful thinking, undemocratic but also scandalous,” the ANC said.
During the Azimio la Umoja event, Musalia was dethroned as Luhya’s spokesperson, a position he has held since 2016, when he was crowned by the Council of Elders of Luhya. The mantle was handed over to the Governor of Kakamega, Wycliffe Oparanya.
Reacting to Musalia’s impeachment, the ANC sent a warning to Atwoli for disrespecting his presidential hopeful. Instead, they asked Oparanya and Atwoli to drop their cowardly features and attempt the presidency instead of idolizing the former prime minister.
“The Council should be immediately removed from office. The ANC advises Atwoli and Oparanya to show individual courage and political prowess by fighting for the presidential ticket of the ODM.
“We urge Atwoli and Oparanya to stop undermining Musalia Mudavadi in his political backyard in an effort to impress their political masters.”,
As the event approached, Senator Cleophas Malala had warned the organizers not to approach the Bukhungu stadium. However, Malala was later summoned and pledged peace as the meeting proceeded with police on high alert.
Musalia took a hard hit when some of his most trusted lieutenants announced their support for Raila’s presidency. The team was led by Lugari MP Ayub Savula and Godfrey Osotsi, among others.
Musalia skipped the meeting with information indicating that he was on the coast while his Ford Kenya counterpart, Moses Wetangula, was in Kitale to meet with wannabes seeking various seats on his party’s ticket.
