In a village in the Conwy Valley, a couple find a unique way to raise money for a much-loved children’s hospice.

Mike and Ann Dowling from The Mill, Melin-y-Coed near the Llanrwstnwy Valley, will open the doors to their beautiful natural garden to raise funds for the much-loved Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospice as well as the local community .

On Saturday July 2 from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., they will invite the public to come and see their gardens and refresh themselves for a simple charitable donation.

Since 2017, the couple have painstakingly restored their old mill and half-acre of woodland gardens, paying particular attention to natural plants and reeds that will attract wildlife.

Mike said: “We are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible and there will also be a thrift shop and two bike auction.

“The gardens had been untouched for four and a half years before we moved in on July 4, 2017 – so we will also be celebrating five years here.

“The Afon Cyffdy crosses the garden and descends to join the River Conwy at Llanrwst, and after Storm Ciara hit us in 2020 we had maritime defense experts install 120 tonnes of granite to raise the banks and make a safe walk on the river for people to enjoy.

“We have also set up land nearby for free parking and are hoping for a lovely sunny afternoon so people can enjoy our garden and tea and cakes.”

Beverley Bradley, area fundraiser for Hope House Tŷ Gobaith, said: “We are so grateful to Mike and Ann for thinking of us with their event.

“We provide specialist nursing care and support to 750 terminally ill children and their families in North Wales, Mid Wales and Shropshire and every donation is vital.

“We hope many people will be able to attend and enjoy this beautifully restored woodland garden.”

The Mill, Melin-y-Coed is located with the postcode LL26 0SW.

Proceeds will be shared between Hope House Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices and the community of Melin-y-Coed.
